Essential Mac Software from a Windows User

    Sunday, August 17th, 2014

I’ve been a Microsoft Windows user for most of my life and I don’t imagine that will change any time soon. With that being said there is a fondness by many in the design community for Apple Mac computers which is why I’ve found myself doing a lot of work on a Mac recently.

I’ve worked with Macs a number of times in the past but have failed to be converted to a Mac user personally.  There are many people who will try to argue that one OS is better than the other for one reason or another but I believe that one isn’t better than the other, because there isn’t really much you can do on one that you can’t do on the other, and which ever you choose to use really just boils down to a matter of preference.

Although there’s not much one can do that the other can’t , a lot of it is done in different ways, and when moving from one system to another you quickly discover which of your commonly used software programs aren’t cross-platform and need to find alternative software to perform the same tasks and actions. Below is a list of Mac software I started using  in lieu of similar software I use on windows. (more…)

    The LG G2

Often times in the smartphone market we see manufacturers focus on a few  features in an attempt to give their phone some notoriety such as having a camera with the highest number of pixels, a large display, or a pretty design, while not even attempting to compete in other areas such as battery life and processing power. That doesn’t apply to the  LG G2. This seems to be a phone that was created to be the best on the market period.

Beware of Shady Hostage Holding Web Developers

    beware shady web developers

    Their Methods

There’s a certain breed of web developer out there who invokes some shady practices designed to keep clients trapped within their service.

One common practice for these kind of developers is hosting sites on their own servers without providing the client with FTP access or Admin level access to their website, this is done with the intent of preventing clients from hiring any other developers to work on the site, and to prevent clients from moving the website to a different server.

Another practice which goes hand and hand with limiting client access to the site, is purchasing client domain names, when a web developer purchases a domain name for all intents and purposes they own the domain name and not the client, if another person owns your website domain name this is not only a concern for your brand but also for any SEO authority and value your site establishes while online.  A shady developer who owns your domain name could try to charge you an inflated price to transfer domain ownership, or even worse sell your domain to someone else.

The last practice I’ll mention involves licensing agreements. As with all contracts if you’re signing a contract with your web developer read it carefully. Some developers include license agreements in their contracts which give them ownership of all source code and graphics, so essentially they own your site and all the work that you’ve hired them to preform.

    Not All Bad

Now there are many developers out there who will take care of site site hosting, and domain registration, simply to make things easier for themselves and clients without the intent of extorting their clients at a later date, but as I’ve illustrated above this can be done with dubious intentions.

Maximizing the SEO Benefits of Google Plus

    Saturday, September 28th, 2013

Google has already stated that +1’s have no impact on search rankings, but there are plenty of other basic SEO factors at play on Google+ that make it worth the time and effort for any site owners and online publishers, more so than any other major social network. Here are  5 things to keep in mind to get the maximum SEO value from your Google+ account.

    1. PageRank and Indexing

Google Plus profiles and posts have page rank and are indexed just like any other web pages. In my experience the best way to build pagerank on your Google+ profile is to maintain an active presence on Google+, this means sharing content on Google+ and interacting with other Google+ users to build an active following and gain visits to your profile.

    2. Follow Links

Content in certain types of post, and certain parts of the Google+ profile will result in no follow links. The posts and profile areas that yield follow links are detailed below.

    Profile Links

Follow links on profile pages can be obtained  in two sections of the profile. The first section of the profile where follow links can be placed is in the Introduction area of the Story section. The second place where follow links can be obtained is in the Links area of the Links Section, note that Links created in the Other Profiles and Contributor To areas of the Links section will be no follow.
